Today is my sister’s birthday. I’d like to wish her the best birthday ever and the most fantastic year yet. I’ve always looked up to my sister, loved her dearly, and craved her attention. To commemorate this special day and hopefully put a smile on her face, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite sisterly stories and fond memories from our lives, in bullet point fashion:
- One of my all time favorite memories with my sister is the entire summer of 1994 (?). This is the summer Sarah and I took guitar lessons at Beacock’s and had enough allowance to go to Taco Time and Baskin Robbin’s every week. She’d drive us in the Dodge and we’d blare Jane Says by Jane’s Addiction. Sometimes we’d also hit up Hollywood Video where we would always rent the same movies: The Cure’s Picture Show or an episode of MTV’s 120 Minutes. It was one of the best times of my childhood.
- When Sarah was in 2nd grade (?) I embarrassed her badly by showing up at her school to pick her up with our baba in an orange corduroy jumpsuit, complete with bell bottoms (although that really should be blamed on the parents).
- My entire youth Sarah’s favorite way of teasing me was to tell me I smelled like dog (I was super outdoorsy). Sometimes I’ll catch that whiff after a walk with Buddy or a bike ride and it always makes me smile.
- Sarah introduced me to Weezer, via tape and walkman. Actually, she introduced me to pretty much all good music and was kind enough to let me tag along to shows with her as early as 6th grade (I credit my love of the Cure, Mos Def, Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Tegan and Sara and many more to her).
- The only broken bone I have ever sustained was when I was once again craving Sarah’s attention and decided to bust in on her in her room with my arms flailing about like a mad woman (those who know me well, know I still sometimes do this). Sarah’s response? Kick her legs frantically. Her foot met my pinky finger and it snapped in 2 places. This memory is a good one, because you should have seen how quick her sisterly instincts took over and all she wanted to do was make me better. (I should note, this is also the age my parents finally gave in and installed locks on our bedroom doors to avoid such catastrophes.)
- To this day Sarah and I often spend time indulging our sweet tooth’s and I can’t even remember the last time we had dinner without dessert. We spend the rest of our time whining about our weight and trying to motivate each other to work out.
- When we were really young (I was probably 8?) Sarah and I were super into gymnastics. Our parent’s bought us a video called Gymnastic’s Greatest Stars. We watched it over, and over, and over. To this day I bet I have some parts memorized. What about you Roo?
- We share a common love and infatuation for many things, some of which are not appropriate or easy to explain on this public blog. One that I can mention is goats. We LOVE goats and we especially love the impersonation David does of a goat. Priceless.
- The other night Sarah and David and Mike and I went out for dinner. We went to an Irish pub afterward and Sarah and I shared a hearty laugh watching drunk girls make fools of themselves. I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time. Maybe that’s wrong of me, but I think you had to be there.
- Moving to Seattle with Sarah is by far one of the best memories. Thanks for taking a risk and being my roomie all those years!
I’m officially rambling now, so I’ll finish by saying thank you. Thank you, Sarah, for being an awesome big sister. I love you more than ever and am very proud of the fine lady you’ve become. Hope this is the best year yet.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SISSY ROO!

Awww, thanks Sister! The panda cupcakes are awesome! Thanks for all the memories. I had many laughs remembering all those things! Here are some more memories for you:
-Besides Gymnastics’ Greatest Stars, we used to have many favorite videos that we’d watch over and over again: Ramona and 10,000 Maniacs Unplugged come to mind! And yes, I do still have many segments of Gymnastics’ Greatest Stars memorized!
-I once channeled Joan Cusack, and you were my only witness.
-Bobo and Pinky–need I say more?
I’m glad I decided to move to Seattle with you. I wouldn’t trade my sister for the world!
Love,
Sarah
Oh Sarah! I wish I’d thought of those! Bobo and Pinky. Haven’t thought of that in years! And it’s true, people, she did channel Joan Cusack and was dead on. I probably also should have included “SARAH! VIANETTA…NOWWWWW!”
